As a kid we, very creatively, referred to the small, spikey balls that fall from sweet gum trees as "Spike Balls". My brother and I used to have wars, throwing them at each other. (Weren't we kind?) Now that our home has sweet gum trees out front, I have learned that these small weapons of mass destruction don't start as spikey little bombs. They begin their life a beautiful shade of red, soft and pliable. Stepping out the front door each morning, I pause to look for the distinctive red on the sidewalk, dismayed by the ones that have been carelessly squished. Today I thought to look up and watch them grow.
